Doctor Who stars Alex Kingston and Noel Clarke have been cast in the lead roles alongside The League of Gentlemen’s Reece Shearsmith in Chasing Shadows, a new ITV crime drama.
The four-part series will focus on the work of a missing persons field unit charged with tracking down serial killers who prey on impressionable and vulnerable people.
Kingston has played River Song in Doctor Who since 2008, while Clarke played companion Mickey Smith between 2005-2010. Shearsmith appeared as Patrick Troughton in BBC Two’s Doctor Who drama An Adventure in Space and Time last year.
Reece Shearsmith will play DS Sean Stone and Alex Kingston will play his partner, Ruth Hattersley. Noel Clarke (Star Trek Into Darkness) will play DI Prior.
The official synopsis reads: “On the face of it Sean (Reece Shearsmith) is intense, socially awkward and a misfit. Get to know him and you realise he’s a man on a mission even if it leads him to self destruction and his eccentric manner frequently lands him in hot water. He’s obsessed with deciphering codes and uncovering patterns of behaviour particularly in relation to those most at risk, vulnerable missing persons.
“Ruth (Alex Kingston), on the other hand, is a stabilising influence. Maternal, but not mumsy, she’s an analyst from the Missing Persons Bureau tasked to work alongside Sean. In effect his bosses have sidelined him and she is his lifeline. Sean refuses to be tethered to Ruth, but eventually learns that he and Ruth make an awesome team. She has the ability to connect with people and has the expertise to trace missing persons. He is socially awkward and struggles to communicate; yet their strengths strike the perfect balance. On paper. In reality, it is a rocky partnership.”
Created and written by Rob Williams (DCI Banks, Holby City), Chasing Shadows begins filming soon in the South East of England.
Series 8 of Doctor Who is currently filming in Cardiff and is expected to begin airing in August.
Finally a new project for Alex, exactly what we’ve all been waiting for!
Matt attended New Orleans Comic Con recently and had some thoughts on Alex and Peter working together.
Don’t ask. I’m really possessive over Alex. I said this to Steven. I was like, ‘Listen, just don’t! Just not Alex. Anyone else, but don’t give [Capaldi] River.’ But Peter is the Doctor now so hey, what can I do?
I think that Steven will be planning things that are going to unfold over years and I think he’ll reinvent the folklore, and it will become Peter’s folklore. But I am really proud of the fact that Alex was part of number Eleven’s life. My wife!

Radio 3′s spring schedule also includes a production of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra with Sir Kenneth Branagh and Alex Kingston in the lead roles.
The pair previously co-starred in a sold-out production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, staged at the Manchester International Festival last year.
Sir Kenneth said he was “excited to be reunited” with Kingston following their “hugely rewarding partnership” last July.
“To play another pair of Shakespeare’s great couples, and for a personally beloved medium, is a privilege,” the actor knight continued.
Directed by Alison Hindell, Antony and Cleopatra will be broadcast on 20 April to mark the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth.
Tickets are still available and can be bought here.

“Fast, furious and unstoppable … this Macbeth [knocks] the breath out of everyone, audience included.”
– The New York Times
Shakespeare’s classic tale of ambition and treachery gets a thrilling new life in the U.S. premiere of the electrifying production by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, following its acclaimed sold-out run at the Manchester International Festival in England. Kenneth Branagh, in his first Shakespeare performance in more than a decade, is joined by Alex Kingston, in their highly-anticipated New York stage debuts, as the once great leader and his adored wife, who incites him to sell his soul in the quest for greater power.
Utilizing the Armory’s unique space and military history, this audacious staging brings to life one of Shakespeare’s most powerful tragedies in an intensely physical, fast-paced production that places the audience directly on the sidelines of battle. Blood, sweat, and the elements of nature can be directly felt as the action unfurls across a traverse stage, with heaven beckoning at one end and hell looming at the other.
Commissioned and produced by Park Avenue Armory and Manchester International Festival.
